IT'S A MATTER OF PRINCIPAL - AND I ASSERT THAT THERE ARE MANY LOUSY PRINCIPALS AND TOO FEW REALLY GOOD ONES.

savingeducation In this data-frenzied budget crunching time, we only hear the problems in getting funding. After our long election year trying to get change at the MDUSD,  I am reminded, once again, of the issue of staff morale on sites due to a misplaced principal or an administrator who should not have the role at all.

A recent study from the Teachers College Record suggests that ...

My principal? Holy cow! Where do I even start? I'll post something tomorrow about how ridiculously bad they are at this job, and how no one at the district seems to even notice.

from last night...

the principal that I work with now has a simply horrible record over the past 4 to 5 years.

-very little time spent on campus.
-an unwillingness to support students that truly need help
-no visibility on campus, in the office all the time
-does not attend school functions

..the list goes on and on, and MDUSD seems to either not care, or not know at all. In either case, it's a crime that someone so incompetent is allowed to continue with their job. Especially at a time like this when major cuts are being made, and people who could do this job well are losing their own jobs.

Teachers are evaluated by their principals. I heard that our principal had been evaluated recentely, but no staff member was ever asked to voice an opinion. Why not?

What can be done to weed out principals who just aren't doing their jobs?

Are students' or parents' opinions part of your teacher evaluation?

Parents and students are not part of a teacher's formal evaluation. But you'd better believe that if I never attended a grade level function, never made myself available to students or parents, and stayed in my room unwilling to address the serious concerns of the parents in my room, that parents would be bringing it to the attention of my superiors. That WOULD be used as part of a teacher's evaluation.

No, of course teacher's aren't part of their principal's evaluation...they work below them. But teachers see on a regular basis the performance of their principal. They end up shouldering the burden for the work that bad principals don't do. Teachers know better than anyone the quality of an administrator. I have seen a superintendent or assistant super at our school only a handful of times in the 10+ years I've been teaching. How is it possible to accurately evaluate performance by showing up less than once a year? It's not.

Have you addressed your concerns to his or her superior?

To be honest I can not believe some of the issues I have seen in the schools here.
My children have came from a different state and started school here I have been over whelmed with the Lack of real education The half days and half day on Wednesday is a waste of educaton for our children.
I have done a LOT of research on how some other countries do there schooling. The school my children went to had FULL DAY K and only missed school half a day one day a month. I do not understand where the money goes that all of these people pay on their taxes for schools.
Last night I heard that part of the money we are getting for the bail out is going to ATV ROAD construction for 4 wheelers. I am all for fun but the kids education system needs FIRST PRIORITY here.
First it needs to cut out WASTEFUL SPENDING.

You should organize a faculty senate to address the site concerns.
