I don't have all the answers but here is one suggestion. Like most people, I can see what does NOT work. Stuffing education into the lower spectrum of any kind of funding and continually slashing budgets is a stupid way to run the state and the country.
I have, in the past, suggested dynamiting the whole system. Like a giant parasite that feeds off a host, all the pieces that suck the lifeblood out of education have been making the rules and running the process. Those idealists within, who believe in making a difference in a child, have little control over the giant cancer we call the education system.

These are exceptional ideas, and excellent writing. I hope others read this and truly explore ways to turn some (all) of your ideas into reality.
I'm only one person...but I'll do what I can.
Love your writing. And I wish we could implement some of these changes. There is no reason that the big businesses that surrounds us, (PG&E, John Muir, BofA,Safeway to name a few), can't get involved with internships, spend a day a month talking to kids about why certain skill are important to learn, teach them. Give field trips for middle school and up. Donate. It would be great to see the U.S. be up near the top in educating our children and down with 3rd world countries. It would also be great to California not 48th or 49th in educating our kids.
