This lunacy was later called "Certificate of Completion" for those kids who could not pass the High School Exit Exam and thus did not graduate. But so that their feelings are not hurt so much, they should get a certificate of having completed school. NOT! They have not completed anything. Let's apply this to brain surgeons. "I am sorry, you failed brain surgery, but here is a certificate of completion." Why? The human condition demands pain and hurt and failure in order to achieve drive and determination and problem solving and a desire to succeed. Look at any school and you will find a very low number of students who have the drive to succeed. Most students hate to read, hate to write, and by the time they are job hunting, are still unable to put a decent sentence together. In America, the needs of the one have outweighed the needs of the many. Every child has more rights than they know what to do with and their right to exercise stupidity is backed by docile administrators and abrasive parents who enjoy milking the system for every last cent. Is it any wonder that the word "responsibility" has little meaning? Is it any wonder why high schools are rivers of trash generated by students who could not be bothered using the trash can for the simple reason that no one can make them? And no one can! THE BRITS GET THE IDIOCY OF ALWAYS HAVING TO MAKE CHILDREN FEEL GOOD - THEY BECOME NARCISSISTS! GO FIGURE! SO WHEN DO WE CLUE IN?

One of the tenets of our dysfunctional society is the obsessive need to always make children feel good so that their feelings are not hurt. Some fool, with a good lawyer, started the trend that we should always praise our kids no matter the poor quality of work they may have done. "Oh Johnny, your paper is illegible, and all the answers are wrong, but here is a sticker because you turned it in!"

Not clued in anytime soon. I believe that people are basically good, yet I see so much disregard for others, it makes me so sad. What you write about the trash being thrown on the ground reminds me of what I witness often. Very disappointing.
I do enjoy your blog Andre'. I try to be positive for the most part. It is alarming that there are so many unmotivated, disrespectful, apathetic, selfish people in this world - in our own community. Not only that, but borderline illiterate. I have hope that it will get better. But how? I see things so differently now that I have become a Mother. I never thought I would be raising a child in a world such as this.
You do write very truthfully Andre'. That is what keeps me reading, and gets me thinking. I continue, trodding on, with hope for each new day. The fruit project has inspired me. If it weren't a success, I may have lost hope in humanity. It is only with meeting each new person that I realize something good must come of it.
What are we going to do if education continues to fail our youth? What does it take to be a motivator? If children aren't born to be giving and compassionate, can it be taught? I don't just need my own child to succeed, I need to see an entire generation excel. I wish I could solve this heavy burden.
