CALLING ALL PINK-SLIPPED TEACHERS. ADD YOUR VOICE - SAY YOUR PIECE - VENT, SCREAM, SHOUT.

The other day I posted an email from one MDUSD teacher who had been pink-slipped. Now I am calling on all pink-slipped teachers to post a comment - say your piece, vent, make your views known. You may be anonymous, but your message needs to be heard.

Mister Writer,
I am a teacher, but didn't get a pink slip. Now that I have said that, I am really angry at the number of my colleagues who did receive them. It sounds like "we" are going to wipe out a whole "generation" of California teachers right as many of them are hitting their strides as expert teachers. How dare we do this to our California students? At our site alone, pink slips went to PE teachers who have brought joy to physical education for most of the kids. PE is a a favorite class for most of my sixth grade students! Two of our special ed teachers, one of our amazing collaboration teachers, a department head... and I am sure I don't even know all of those who received them.
The most effective schools have teachers who have a full range of of experience. A school needs the energy, joy, and creativity of the new teachers, and the wisdom and experience of the "older" teachers. The group receiving pink slips last week went back to 2004. While I know that it's possible that many of those teachers receiving slips will indeed keep jobs, the true reality is that we are going to lose a lot of people who would change the world for the students they will now never have.
I am angry. I am angry at a system that begs people to sign up to do this noble job because there are going to be teacher shortages, and then lets them go without other jobs to fall back on. I am angry that I have a job where funding keeps getting cut further, but the expectations for MY performance, judged by the test performance levels of my students, keep getting raised. And my colleagues, my teams that support and encourage each other toward best and creative practices, are being broken up because the people in charge can't seem to realize that education MUST be a financial priority in California.
So, Mister Writer, there's my response.
With anger and tears,
Shauna

Finishing out the school year not knowing whether you will have a job next year or not is not a good feeling. I was fortunate to not receive a pink slip, but six other teachers at my site were not as fortunate.

Mike Noce had stated 600 would receive pink slips out of approximately 2000. All of those with four years of seniority or less.

Even those that are going through credentialing programs now, along with those that are just finishing their student teaching, are among those affected. There's a number of subs and long term subs that are looking for positions that are just not there. Students are affected if not directly, but indirectly as well. It's time to stand up and be heard.

Dear Mr. Writer,

I am one of the 6oo teachers pink slipped in MDUSD. Not only I am pink slipped but so are 9 other teachers at my school. So that makes 10 out of 24 teachers at one elementary school. I'd like to know where the children will be next year? Are they magically going to disappear? Will we have one kindergarten class of 96 children, instead of 3 classes of 32? Am I frustrated? You bet I am ! I grew up here, am the single parent of 2, and love this district and the school I teach at. I am told I will not know if I will have a job until well into June. If I am lucky enough to get rehired in this district, it is unlikely I will get to continue to teach at my current school because those who were not pink slipped can come and take my job after May 15th.Do we realize by sending that many pink slips that they are going to re assign 100's teachers if they get rehired? Where is the continuity. If you want great schools and programs then do not tear apart a community of students, teachers, and parents. I think the hardest part for me personally is to see a huge teacher recruitment job fair sign on my own school marquee. Let's lay off 600 teachers and have a job fair! Every morning I park my car and feel slapped in the face. The worst part is the parents who ask me how I got a pink slip when the district is having a teacher job fair ...I also love the people that say "do not take it personally!" Well I do and we should. We are hurting our most precious commodity in the state of California and that is our children. Times are tough and many sacrifices are being made due to what the State of California has dealt us with the budget. Can we at least keep our sensitivity and our heart even though we are losing our programs?

Can you explain the 'Job Fair at my school'
aspect. This has not gotten much attention in the press and it appears to be a major destabilization method that is inflicted on our school teachers.

The protest at College Park turned very nasty leaving the administration running after students as garbage cans burned, smoke bombs filled the halls, and the activity spilling over to Sun Valley Mall. To those parents of CPHS, I find this event an indicator of what CPHS is turning into. Thanks MDUSD for underfunding that school and for packing them in like sardines as YV sits half empty and PHM's facilities are under utilized. Sure this district can cut and cut and act like a victum all the time, but the truth is the district is so mis-managed that the entire house has fallen.

Yes and no. Be careful to not lump the errors of the past with the plan for the future. But honestly, it was not the district but the governor of the state who decided teachers needed lube. There is no money. What is going to happen? Start lynching the politicians that allowed insanity to prevail. Start dispatching the lawyers that propagate the lawsuits that drive the prices every higher for basics life health insurance. Condemn Bush for doubling the deficit and creating negative funding to extremes we have not seen before. Of course, he was the education president despite his fundamental illiteracy. And blame ourselves for being so ridiculous that we buy things we cannot afford, including those luxury items that will cost our children any semblance of a decent future. Need I go on?

I was pink-slipped by my school administrator. I am not a teacher, but an I/A. She later came to tell me my job was not being funded for the fall. As it is PTA funded, I asked her if the PTA agreed to this. She said yes. I contacted the PTA board, and they were shocked that she would say such a thing because they hadn't voted on anything! In fact, at the emergency meeting, over 35 families and some faculty stood up for the position and wanted it funded. She then took her anger out on those faculty members. She wants what she wants, casts blame wherever she can, insisted all teachers take this "bullying" course, but has failed to realize she is the biggest bully of them all.
