I am not being oppositional here. The STAR test is one big pile of C**P, and not worthy of being an assessment. Of course politicians and bureaucrats will argue otherwise, but the bottom line is that the STAR test takes no intelligence to pass and a little intelligence to skew to your advantage. And so I am willing to tell any parent the secret to having their child do well so long as you are willing to sign a piece of paper that states that my advice does not, in any way, show that your child is worthy of the score they receive. What that means is that they may score well and understand little. It is provable. It is tangible. And it has absolutely nothing to do with learning except that the last president rammed it down your throat under the pretence of raising academic achievement. It does not do that. Our dropouts prove that!
If you want to know how to raise your child's test scores, email me at andre@misterwriter.com with STAR TEST in the subject line and I will give you the info you need (and the disclaimer that you must sign.)
I will also tell you what you will need to do to ensure that your child is actually learning something more than what little we demand in California.
Please do not email me to debate the merits of this assessment. I will not respond to that. I have posted enough things to show you my point that I do not want to waste time having to argue it. You either believe it or you do not.
This is not an attack against the school district; they do not mandate what your child must learn; that comes from much higher up the food chain. My official position with regard to the MDUSD is that they are doing now, what needs to be done. First the financials need to be handled, then we can talk details.
Don't forget your #2 pencil.....

Andre',
If my child were in school, I would contact you. Your dedication is amazing. My husband and I are both aware of these sad facts regarding testing scores. It is difficult to see so many young adults that are basically illiterate and very unprepared for the working world.
We will do our best as parents to give our child the tools to learn and succeed in life. We understand that school will not ever offer all that a child needs in terms of an education. Star testing...eeehh...that's a sore topic.
Yawn! I tell my kids not to stress. It's not that important for them to succeed in life. It is for the teacher to keep their job, but not my kids.
I feel so validated whenever I read this blog. I have long believed that teaching to the test has been a huge factor in ruining the state of our education system.
I hope that sometime in the neat future we can just blow up this stupid system and start out fresh. Too late for my kids, but hopefully theirs will fair better.
Mad Mom, I feel validated too. If I could write as beautifully as MisterWriter, I would start a blog too. Very fascinating to read his thoughts.
MisterWriter,
If you check the MDUSD website, the testing window for STAR is April 10th to May 15th for grades 2-11. The 4th and 7th grade CA Writing Standards test was March 3-4. Please make sure you have accurate information. I am a teacher and I have parents who read your blog. I can just hear them asking me why they didn't know STAR testing was this month. Thanks!
