BORED? I KNOW - LET'S BLOW UP THE MOON! REALLY! IT'S SCIENCE STUPID!

Science is not boring. Not ever. We're going back to the moon to detonate a very large explosion to kick up a mass of debris so that we can fly a probe through it and look for... water!

And as if that is not enough, after it gets done, the probe will hurl itself at the moon and explode as well. Same reason.

"The identification of water is very important to the future of human activities on the Moon. LCROSS will excavate the permanently dark floor of one of the Moon’s polar craters with two heavy impactors in 2009 to test the theory that ancient ice lies buried there. The impact will eject material from the crater’s surface and subsurface to create a plume that specialized instruments will be able to analyze for the presence of water (ice and vapor), hydrocarbons and hydrated materials."

If there is a lunar water supply, imagine how much easier a moon base would be; no having to bring the stuff from earth, no interstellar spills.

Anyway, it is cool (and possibly wet) and you should read the story HERE.  Educators, download some cool math stuff related to this story HERE.
