I TOLD YOU ABOUT THIS SCAM AND HAPPILY IT SHOULD BE DONE SOON...

Car warranty scams Back in November I shared with you one phone scam involving warranty calls and how it affected consumers both in the transaction as well as the out of area phone numbers they used to avoid detection (often in other countries). Click HERE for that story.

Well now the FTC is suing several companies after having tracked them down to stop the calls.

"Attorneys general in Arkansas, Indiana and Missouri have taken similar actions over the calls offering deals on extended warranties, which have brought about 300,000 inquiries and 4,000 complaints to the Better Business Bureau from consumers over the past two years. The calls come even if the consumer has signed up for the national "Do Not Call" registry, which is maintained by the FTC."

"I'm not sure which is worse, the abusive telemarketing tactics of these companies, or the way they try to deceive people once they get them on the phone," Leibowitz said. "Either way, we intend to shut them down."

About time. Read that story HERE

On a related matter: Carpet cleaning! I've been getting robodialer calls for a carpet cleaning special in my area. The option to be removed from the calling list by pressing 3 does not work. Pressing 1 to make an appointment then asking to be removed gets a hang up. After numerous calls I went ahead and scheduled an appointment. She said they are Ocean Carpet Cleaning, but I think they just choose different names. She gave me their phone number to call back: (510)688-3361, which she just called from to confirm that they will be here between 4 and 6. When they get to the address I gave them and they call me I'll ask them again to remove me from their calling list. I also reported them to the FCC at https://esupport.fcc.gov/form1088/consumer.do?form_page=1088B
