The first two pictures I took at Heather Farm Park, the third one is one I shot of the Gateway buildings along Willow Pass taken from Clayton Rd. The next two are photos I took in Clayton, up Morgan Territory Rd., and the last one I took downtown Concord from the top of the Todos Santos parking garage looking toward Brenden Theaters. Did you recognize them all?

While the stimulus package injects about $90.9 Billion into education with subcategories assigned for specific amounts; that portion allocated for teacher salaries was listed as $300 million.
And so I looked up the number of teachers in the USA and also for California alone. There are 2.9 million teachers across the country and 310,000 teachers in California.
So here is the math done two ways:
1) Divide the $300 million equally by state and California receives $6 million. Divide that between the 310,000 teachers and each teacher will get a pay increase of..... drumroll.... $19.35!
2) Divide the $300 million equally amongst the 2.9 million teachers across the nation and you get a pay increase of ..... $103 per teacher.
Wow. I'm feeling really stimulated by that!
But it is Friday. Someone should check my math! After all the total given to education was $90.9 billion. If the whole package was given to teacher salaries (which it is not), then each teacher would get a pay increase of $31,344. That would put the average teacher salary range from $60,000 to $100,000.
WORSE, the state gets $250 million to continue the flawed analysis of student performance. What a waste of money that one is. We keep making gains in scores but our dropout rate increases. That math I fully understand!
Here are some breakdowns of the stimulation education will get. Don't get too excited.

Novato's district just eliminated sports and cut 59 teacher jobs. We see other districts closing down schools which our board estimated saves about $460,000 per site.

Looking over tonight's agenda for the MDUSD board meeting, the following are on the block to be cut...
All custodial supervisors.
1 elementary PR Prep teacher.
Reduce High School VPs to two.
3 custodians.
4th and 5th grade music.
9th grade sports (keeping varsity and junior varsity and the hope that coaches' salaries will be paid by parents.)
High School Athletics which will save $721,400.
Increasing the stipend to $300 per month for those teachers declining medical coverage.
Reducing the general fund for curriculum by 80%.
Reducing all Special Education (as allowable by law.)
Consider school closings (would save $460,000 per site.)
Eliminate 50% off the Peer Assistance and Review program and
50% off the Beginning Teacher Support program (BTSA.)
Increase staffing ratios at all school levels.
These items will be discussed tonight, although the actual decisions may be at the next board meeting.
And if you want a reason to approve the parcel tax, this is just the start....

Not that I am not happy to see the Catholic faith update some tenets of faith to the modern age, but this interview with Reverend José Gabriel Funes, head of the Vatican Observatory and a scientific adviser to Pope Benedict XVI, struck me as quite a leap.

I was watching Virginia Hammerness,
the granddaughter of A.P. Giannini on CBS slamming the current Bank of America management as "idiots." It was A.P. Giannini who founded the bank in 1904 as the Bank of Italy because the big eastern banks wouldn't lend money to immigrants, like the Italians.
She recounted how Gianniani became a legend right after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, even though his bank had burned down. She described how he set up a wooden plank atop two barrels on the street and made loans there with just a handshake. He claimed later that every loan was repaid, she explained.
His priority was not greed; but his customers. When he died, his estate was valued at $500,000, although he had declined a bank offer of a $1.7 million bonus claiming that the bank owed it to their customers instead.
You can read the full article HERE, or watch the CBS report.
What stood out for me was the fact that honor was prevalent at the turn of the century. You were as good as your word and without that integrity you were nothing.
So how did the world change so much? How did we become a society of greed and corruption, interested only in the quick profit and not in the well being of customers?
When was the last time you transacted business on a handshake? And could you ever imagine doing so?

This email below that I received will be making its way to everyone. Please forward a link to this page to all your friends - Time is short to get this rolling and the governor of California has already acted.
The Emergency Budget Plan signed by the Governor on February 20th , will require another $7 to 8 million in cuts for 2009-2010 alone. This will be devastating to the program offering for our students, devastating for our employees, and devastating for our community.
I first learned of Fred Phelps and his "interesting" little church when his flock of a few came to protest the marriage of County Clerk Steve Weir to his longtime partner. This is the same group who protest at soldiers' funerals claiming they will go to hell.
Well done Britain. Now the British just have to work on removing some of their other religious influences, CLICK HERE FOR THAT video, and the country may regain some of its former glory.

It seems like a no-brainer. If you've seen half the video games that pass as entertainment and then wonder why we see a rise in violence at schools, and in society at large, and why we have glorified gang activity, tagging, and evading the legal system, you would have been a supporter of the video game law that restricted sales of violent video games to minors that the governor had signed in 2005.
It is not that the games may direct kids to be violent, but that violence begets violence. As it is all entertainment has exceeded any common decency level in terms of the impact and influence that it has on the culture of youth in this country. You just have to watch what goes on at the street level to see that. So why take a form of entertainment that has become the activity choice of kids and apply a guerilla warfare mentality as a reward system? Why is it acceptable to have a game that kills prostitutes, amplifies gang warfare and cop killings? Who can defend that as acceptable? The video game industry, of course.
"Bo Andersen, president and chief executive of the Entertainment Merchants Association, said the ruling vindicates his group's position that "ratings education, retailer ratings enforcement, and control of game play by parents are the appropriate responses to concerns about video game content.""
The law may have another chance at the Supreme Court level. Click the picture to read the story.

A British study has found a viable treatment for kids with peanut allergies. Peanut allergies among kids seem all too often on the rise causing schools to ban peanut products for all kids so as not to cause those harm who have the condition.
"For all our participants, a reaction could lead to life-threatening anaphylactic shock, but now we've got them to the point where they can safely eat at least 10 whole peanuts," said Andy Clark, who led the research published in the journal Allergy.

Ichthyologist George Burgess of the University of Florida has postulated that the recent decline in people getting eaten (fully or partially) by sharks is directly a result of the recession. How? Apparently fewer people are getting to take those oceanside vacations thus depriving the sharks of their normal eating routines.
With that same logic you would think the tourist industry would be thriving since more of those annoyingly demanding tourists get to live? Now there is a solution to prison overcrowding and the governor's plan to release thousands as part of his budget solution.
MisterWriter
Here it comes, ladies and gentlemen, the long awaited budget resolution, a nasty swill of ex-lax designed to close the budget shortfall, at least for this year, and in the process require even more cuts than have already taken place, although, as I understand it, horse racing has escaped somewhat because what California needs are a few more addicted gamblers playing Russian Roulette with the state funding system that works so well!
So expect another $8 million to be circumcised from the MDUSD budget which means an end to all those programs you cherish: sports, music, VP's and more. Honestly, where do you think the money will come from?
The only saving grace, a band-aid in the bloodletting, is the parcel tax plan that will now be on the ballot during the May special election - your one chance to stem the tide of destruction while this district gains momentum and formulates new plans for revenue generation.
$99 a year - that is not even your Starbucks allowance? Tell a friend. More to come... and you can bank on that!

“No other state is in the kind of crisis that California is in,” said Iris J. Lav, the deputy director of the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, a liberal research group in Washington. The roots of California’s inability to address its budget woes are statutory and political. The state, unlike most others, requires a two-thirds majority vote in the legislature to pass budgets and tax increases. And its process for creating voter initiatives hamstrings the budget process by directing money for some programs while depriving others of cash." READ THE REST HERE...
We talked about that pesky 2/3 majority
vote before during an education summit. It seems that, in large part, a failure to effect change can be blamed on that 2/3 requirement used by both sides as a shield to fortify their positions.
Sadly, even when they finally agree on a budget, it will be more cuts in places that are already bleeding out and will solve little in the long run. Isn't it time that the politicians get recalled and we try some other way of business?
I'm not sure which is more gloomy; the weather outside or the economic news that we face as a state and a nation. Sadly, the rain will eventually stop; whereas the fiscal stupidity could continue for quite some time.

It is time to watch out for those bank and credit card notices that come in the mail. You know, the ones with the ultra-fine print... Millions of cardholders have recently received letters from the likes of Citibank, Bank of America Corp., Wells Fargo & Co. and American Express Co. notifying them that their interest rates are going up, in some cases to 30% if a single payment is missed.
In some cases they are even offering a fee to maintain a low interest rate, as well as other questionable tactics. Read the article HERE.

[NOTE: from our reader Dorothy who posted this in comments, but I thought it important enough to add to the post... "BTW, the next time your dentist or doctor sends you a bill that says amounts over 30 days will be charged 1 and 1/2 percent per month, you might let him/her know that those rates exceed the rates allowed under the California Usury Laws. You might also point out that the penalty for usury is a refund of 100% of any interest charged (and treble damages if the individual knowingly charges usurious interest)." Thank you Dorothy.
From the Craigslist Job board... you just have to wonder why this would not be a dream job for some men? The scary part is that those are the very type of people you might not wish for your future child to be sharing genes with!

I hate it when politicians, who make a nice amount of change no matter what ridiculous thing they do, make statements reminding the American public how sheep-like we are.
Following up on my prior piece on the woman with octuplets who had 6 more being raised by grandma, collecting welfare that she did not consider welfare, has now set up a web site to ask for your help in supporting her tribe of fatherless children. By the way of her 6 older children, one has ADHD, one a speech impediment and one has autism. What better reason to produce more children.
While she did receive a large settlement for her back injury, she (and her poor mother stuck raising the other 6) are 50,000 in debt. She receives $490 a month in food stamps and receives about $600 in disability payments a month for each of the three of her older six children with disabilities.
You can watch her HERE explaining why anyone critical of her is "really kind of sick," as she told MSNBC's Ann Curry
Where is CPS when you need them? If you feel the need to support her brand of insanity you can click the picture below to get to her site. It offers two options: Leave a Comment or Make A Donation. I feel sorry for the children.

Announced at the 2-10-09 MDUSD board meeting, Gary Eberhart announced the resignation of Gary McHenry as superintendent of the school district.

It is mind boggling. The ability to make babies is not a right to make babies. Freedom of choice gone wild. The real question is why she is not being judged for the sin of arrogance, ignorance and condemning her children to a bleak future?
